My 1st day with Skype for Mac 0.8.0.4 was great, talking for over an hour with an old friend in Germany at a not known quality. SkypeÕs sound quality easily beats iChat/AIM and also your landline phone service.
Signing up for the SkypeOut service, which allows you to call landline phone numbers all over the world for about $0.02 per minute, was easy and also worked out of the box.
Besides iChat/AIM, Skype is the only VoIP application allowing connecting MACs with PCs. (I cannot wait to see them adding Video.)
Skype uses P2P technology to connect your Mac to other Skype users, not (necessarily) to share files, but to talk.
Free unlimited worldwide phone calls to other Skype users
Superior sound quality
Works with all firewall, NAT and routers Ð nothing to configure
Friends list shows when Skype users are online and ready to talk
Easy to use
Calls are encrypted end-to-end (only for computer-to-computer calls)
Mac version is still in beta, (currently Beta 0.8.0.4)
