I've been asked several times what XA stands for, but I'm stumped.
XA is a standard API for distributed transactions created by X/Open,
which is now known as the Open
Group. The best guess I've seen on the net is "X/Open API". I'm
doubtful of that. X/Open had other APIs, so there is no reason for XA
to be THE X/Open API. The XA
specification is available online but it simply refers to XA as
the name of the specification without explaining what, if anything, it
stands for or how the name was derived.
The spec was created in the pre-HTTP era, and the fossil record is
notably light. So, I'm stumped. If anyone reading this knows
definitively what XA stands for, please send me a note and fill me in.
