Charles' IOC Conundrum. I wonder if it would help if the Content object in question could tell you its media type. The comments are also interesting, especially Rickards cast-to-type idiom, which feels vaguely like what some people call duck typing. Aside from delaying wiring to the last possible moment, there's also a lot of desire for type flexibility, it seems. But as at least one person points out, there's also the Visitor pattern (hence the mention of media type )....
