Yesterday, further to our discussion Java Developers Aren't Buying Sun's Tools Pitch , James Gosling has to say something.

James Gosling, the father of Java, is now chief technology officer for Sun's developer products group. He discussed the company's difficulties in the commercial tools space last week with Compute/world.

Some quotes from the article:

"Microsoft set the list price of tools at something so low that it's almost impossible for an independent company that's just focused on tools to actually survive."

"IBM has put just tremendous funding behind the marketing push for Eclipse at a level that is pretty impressive."

So there we have it. VB programmers as basically too stupid to use existing Java tools. When Microsoft brings cheap tools to the market, they're a problem. When IBM brings a free tool to the market, they're "tremendous".

Whilst Mr Gosling may be an exception technical expert, I'm not so convinced about his business acumin.
