Sun is planning to open source the Project Looking Glass. The project is an experimental 3D desktop system written in Java which runs under Linux. Sun calls it an innovation. I had blogged about it before. But reading Jon's post it looks like Microsoft Research had a similar tool called TaskGallery long time ago. Check out its video here. It looks ugly though but remember it was done in 1999 when video cards were not so common and were underpowered for 3D.

Anyway check out the interview with Hideya Kawahara, the creator of Project Looking Glass. Check out the screenshots and video. It would be nice to see how this evolves.
