The mornings general sessions have just finished, and before I go get some lunch here is a quick update on whats new:

  • J2SE 1.5 (Tiger) has become J2SE 5.0. There are so many new features, that a major version numbering overhall has taken place.
  • Java 3D has been opensourced, and the 3D desktop Project Looking Glass willl also be opensourced in the coming weeks (it looks very cool!)
  • Java Studio Creator has been released, and is available to conference attendees for $49. It is supported on all platforms also, so it will be good to see it running on my PowerBook
  • J2EE will follow the same version numbering change as J2SE, with the next major release being J2EE 5.0
  • Planning is underway for J2SE 6.0 and 7.0 (Mustang and Dolphin) and the release cycles for these will shorten.
  • Annotations will form a big part of J2EE 5.0 with lots of the boiler plate code currently required dropping away. This also includes deployment descriptor information
  • The Client is back. There is going to be a big push towards Client Side Java, whether the client be a dewsktop, a phone, or even (as demonstrated) a car!

I have a few pictures which I will upload later, along with any more items that I remember from the sessions.
