StAX has an opportunity to move to the mainstream with BEA's donation of their reference implementation to the Codehaus's StAX project. Based on the tests from 2004-02-12, the RI was approximately as fast as Xerces2 SAX but with quite a few details that needed to be addressed; it will be interesting to see how it develops.
