Google's ramping up the Beta it looks like, almost everyone seems to be getting more invite credits. I've got five for the first five commenters to this post.

Give me your first name, last name, and email address.

sounds like a perfect way for spammers to harvest email addressed.
Just mention you got GMail invites to give away and a million people will happily give you their email address, no questions asked.

Not saying that's what's happening here, just a thought though...

you also have to wonder if the responders so eager to get a Gmail invite all made that their very first post here.
Did they Google for "GMail invite" and just join any forum where they're given away?

Even funnier is the fact that this is in Buzz which is just the an RSS aggregator here on Artima; the original article is elsewhere, so when the author says "first five posts" he means there, not here. Do they think the author is going to go searching through all the different places that subscribe to his RSS feed?

To expand your point on "social engineering," such as it is, Jeroen, it seems like it is an awfully easy thing, doesn't it?

it is, as is demonstrated by the sharp rise in identity theft happening every year.

And of course the popularity of services like Orkut (another Google way of getting to know all about everyone) where even normally paranoid people jump to the chance to send invites to everyone they know (which under the terms of service means that Google now can do whatever they want with the email addresses of those people).
