Spam ads are subverted because there's Google Ads right next to them. So, if you're sending Spam for $30 ink jetcartridges, the recipient might see ads for $20 ones right next to your Spam. Good.
HTML is filtered out. Good, I hate about 90% of HTML is email. Also, this means spammers can't track if you've read the email (by tracking image downloads). In fact, one of the tips is:
Create a good-looking text version of your email. Text fares better than HTML on every count in Gmail. See the earlier EmailSherpa where we outlined the necessary elements of a good text mailing.

I'm big into simple web applications over ornate web applications or client side ones. Gmail so far -- though, I know it's code is ornate with all that JavaScript -- has such an interface. Hopefully, it'll stay pretty much the same.
