R&D is bust. It's not because the people in the R&D department are bad. It's because the cards are stacked against them. Clay Christensen demolished the idea that R&D is the solution in The Innovator's Dilemma, and it's actually much worse than you might imagine.

No organization ever created an innovation. People innovate, not companies.

The fact is, organizations must learn that there isn't a risk-free technique that always works. The minute we try to make innovation perfect, we cause it to disappear.

Organizations are paralyzed trying to figure out how to create top-down, risk-free bureaucracies that come up with break-throughs, when the answer is quite the opposite. Free Prize Inside
