High Availability PostgreSQL HOWTO - I came across this in the process of choosing a database that may eventually sustain a fairly high volume of reads from multiple machines. (It's for a proposal.) An additional wrinkle is the JDBC driver -- I've done fairly little research into which opensource databases perform best under different types of load, and even less about how/if the JDBC driver has any impact on that. More reading to do...
