Thanks to this OReilly article on Wiring Your Web Application with Open Source Java (using Struts, Hibernate and Spring) I got to this project called Proxool.
Proxool is a Java connection pool implementation that transparently adds connection pooling to your existing JDBC driver.
I remember working with Poolman back about 2-3 years ago.
I will have to check this out.
