If you Ctrl-Click on an application in the dock, one of the menu items you'll see is "Show in Finder" and this opens up a Finder window showing the directory that contains the selected application. As a shortcut, which I found by accident last night, you can Apple key-Click the application to achieve the same result. I'm always amazed at the Mac shortcuts I keep stumbling across!
