I am sure this question is eating many of you from inside and you are looking for a good answer just like me.

From IBM's letter to Sun in making Java open source, here are the last lines that forced me to get a solid answer:

"In addition, this would accelerate the growth and adoption of technologies that are built on Java and are
critical to our customers today, including Web services and Service Oriented Architecture. "


The link to resouce points to a very nice explanation of SOA and this definition would help understanding SOA further.
