I spent the last hour reading through the WIRED article The New Face of the Silicon Age.
The quote that caught my attention was "high concept and high touch".
It can be understood in its correct context of the paragraph below:
"And therein lies the opportunity for Americans. It's inevitable that certain things - fabrication, maintenance, testing, upgrades, and other routine knowledge work - will be done overseas. Bu

t that leaves plenty for us to do. After all, before these Indian programmers have something to fabricate, maintain, test, or upgrade, that something first must be imagined and invented. And these creations must be explained to customers and marketed to suppliers and entered into the swirl of commerce in a fashion that people notice, all of which require aptitudes that are more difficult to outsource - imagination, empathy, and the ability to forge relationships. After a week in India, it seems clear that the white-collar jobs with any lasting potential in the US won't be classically high tech. Instead, they'll be high concept and high touch."
I guess the goal for us in the IT marker moving forward is to train our minds to be technically innovative as well as business knowledgeable.
Besides adding the technical value to a company, those who will be secure in their IT career will be those who provide innovative ideas and solutions that affect a companies bottom li

Be it helping streamline some process or product, or using technical innovation to create a business opportunity for the orgranization you work for.
I believe it is up to every IT person to enlighten themselves on their business contribution to the company they work for.
We all know what we technically contribute, but understanding why it is that your technical contribution serves a business purpose is the key to always being ahead of the game and being able to sell yourself to a company as a good technical and business asset.
Remember, there is a reason your manager does not always need to know more technical stuff than you.
His job is to tell you what to you to create with your techincal skills, and he will use that end product for the business goals of the company.
