It seems there is to be a new era of collaboration to ensure the continued development of Java. It's been announced by Oracle that they and IBM will work closely together in the OpenJDK community to keep Java open source and to progress it forward. The senior vice president of Oracle, Hasan Rizvi said,
"The Java community is vital to the evolution of the Java platform. The collaboration between Oracle and IBM builds on the success of OpenJDK as the primary development platform for Java SE"
It sounds like the focus will be on developing the source code rather than trying to bring their respective JVMs together. There's also a commitment to the JCP program and making sure it remains the primary standard for Java specifications.
IBM have also endorsed the proposed Plan B for the release of JDK 7 and JDK 8.
