Apple has released Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4 which fixes several critical remotely exploitable security vulnerabilities. Perhaps Apple got an earful at WWDC about the wisdom of leaving known holes in shipping software for months without a fix. Unfortunately installing it seems to require 10.5.7, which has been bricking assorted PowerBooks lately. If Apple had fixed this when they should have, this wouldn't be an issue.
