Without much fanfare, the 2003 JCP
election results are in. I previously
mentioned that I hoped to see more individual members on the EC.
Apparently I wasn't the only one, as Doug Lea and Richard
Monson-Haefel both were the winners.
I wonder how the JCP being more open to individual members
affected the voting. There are more individual members than ever, and
I bet that an individual member is more likely to vote than a
corporate member. If most corporations are like my previous employer,
it's probably hard enough to just figure who the JCP representative
is, let alone trying to get someone to cast a vote on behalf of the
company. And, I think it's fair to say that individual members are
more likely to vote for other individuals than corporations.
According to the site, 26% of the 635 eligible JCP members (165
members) voted. That's not a lot. It wouldn't take that many new
indvidual members to influence a JCP election.
Certainly in this case, it was all for the best. Doug and Richard
are clearly Java experts with a lot invested in the Java platform. I
think they will both do a great job both representing Java developers
on the EC and in shaping the future of Java.
