Several of you might have laughed when I predicted that MIDP would be gone in 3 to 5 years and we would be focusing on J2ME CDC. Motorola, oneo fthe first supporters of MIDP and contributors to MIDP, has announced that its getting out of MIDP handset sales and focusingn on CDCD handsets according to LinuxDevices. This is not an isolated event as SonyEricsson wil be announcing their CDC move between now an end of first quarter 2009.

The factors driving it are iPhone instant Internet features, costs of SoC one chip solutions comng way down with chip speeds increasing while power consumption has been kept the same, and the huge number of low cost OEMs popping up in Asia. It should be noted that when Sun Microsystems bought the Java as an OS on Mobile Phone folks that they had the right idea of JavaSE on a mobile device as an OS. They were just too early and did not follow through with having java integrated with OS structures.

The next step you will see is Android on very low cost devices. Given that OpenMoko folks are already moving in that direction we should see some other OEMs responnd
