Just some simple warning signs to avoid from past Start Up experience including the recent Chicago Start-Up:

Founder Hires Web Designer for Managing Producing a Web Software Platform: I just went through one of these events with a Chicago Start-Up. Web designers lack the domain knowledge to be effective in managing a Web Software Platform project.

Excessive Spending in the First Few Months: Excessive spending in any area within the first few months suggest that founder is not entirely dealing with the realities of a start up. It is not do not spend money but attempting to buy and build out a data center when development team has no time to build it is not the best strategy when there are so many cloud computing and hosting services out there for just that need.

Founder has a lot of domain names: it is not that domain name speculation is bad it is just that that business model does not match with any other high tech start up business model an it is pointless to deal with a founder who has it on their brain to make those two models match.

Founder wants business model or tech implementation or both to be static and not changing: This is probably the biggest mistake in that you are attempting to match both the business model and tech model to the market and quite frankly markets move fast. Both founders and developer will get it wrong the first time that is why everyone hurries a light speed and changes both models to match the market so that it becomes a success.
