There are some tools and techniques to put a start-up to the smell test, not to say that you should ever take a gig to get some money into savings and etc just stuff to make you more aware.

Company Story matching-I use archive.org as generally a true story will somewhat match the content and behavior of website over lifetime of start up. The other tool I sue ot match up a start-up story is domain tools.

If nothing matches and you need the money realize it will not be there for long and plan accordingly. Also question the associations with that start up story. This is not to say that there are not good start ups out there for you to complete gigs,projects, or etc you just need to be prepared for the situation you may be stepping into at that moment.
