  • Workers Fear Cooperating in Virtual Teams May Make Them Obsolete: "if your knowledge--not to mention the tricks and tips it has taken years to learn--is deposited in a database for all to access, does the organization still need you? 'It's a real fear,' says Neale. 'Technology has the potential to destabilize the relationship between organizations and employees.'" [From CNET]
  • Multi-timezone Team Tips:
    • For phone meetings, put each person in a seperate room to prevent one group of people ganging up on individuals on the other end of the phone
    • Smooth out small cultural communication differences that can add up to flip the bozo bit, e.g., "Americans, for example, tend to frame requests with phrases like 'Thanks in advance for sending me …,' and Israelis would say, 'Thanks for what? I haven't done anything yet,' recounts Laurie Guarino, a member of the company's public relations staff."
    • "[V]irtual teams have a much more difficult time distinguishing the conflict of ideas in their virtual environment from the conflict of personal relationships.... The more team members trust each other, the less likely they are to mistake the battle of the idea for the battle of the ego. Again, this places more responsibility on the team leader. 'You [the leader] have to be much more intentional about it,' Neale says.... 'There's no substitute [for face-to-face time],' agrees HP's Monroe. 'Driving travel costs to zero is a false economy.'"
    • Virtual teams seem to perform as well as non-vitrual teams, but, "Process conflict is greater on virtual teams. 'As more virtual teams have to manager greater complexity, attention to process can become a key to their success. A similar focus in (more traditional) teams, however, may actually get in the way of efficient and effective standard operating procedures.'"
  • Microsoft to Spend $10 Bln on Small Firms (SMB's)- selling a high volume of cheap goods has long been a winning strategy of the other industries, and it seems inevitable that business software will move out if it's current model of "sell high dollar software to a few huge companies" to "sell a lot of low prices software to smaller companies."
