I finally have the Internet up and running in the new apartment. Cox took a few days longer to get this all setup than they should have. Then it took a few hours to figure out how to trick the cable modem into thinking there’s only one computer talking to it. Kudos to Cisco/Linksys for providing detailed instructions explaining exactly how to do this.
This connection is much faster than my old SpeakEasy DSL line and about half the price, but the company you have to deal with is much more obnoxious. I considered staying with SpeakEasy in the new place, but they were limited to 1 Mb down, 128kbps up in this location. :-( FIOS was also not available here.
I’m going to try to avoid running wires around the apartment this time. Most of the computers here have wireless. I’ll need to get an adapter for the printer though. I’ll put the router next to my main desktop so I can run a patch cable straight to it, and get faster downloads there.
My NEC flat panel monitor did not survive the trip unscathed. It has several hundred pixels stuck on blue. Cracked glass I would understand, but broken pixels? I’m not sure what do about that. I suspect it’s still under warranty.
My wife’s Anthro computer desk also arrived in pieces, even though it had left New York as one object. At some point the movers decided to disassemble it. Only it uses really strangely threaded screws and they neglected to keep the screws. If we can’t find the appropriate screws somewhere, we’ll have to file a claim with the movers for that one.
