James Lorenzen has good suggestion of how to view HSQL DB data as in switch it in DataSource to non memory(ie file) and us the DBVisualizer in this blog post. Remember, you still need to put test data in to see the tables. Quick check and you should see at least three files in the grails project folder:

devDB.lck
devDB.log
devDB.properties
