I've been looking for a Java "obfuscator" tool to provide at least a small degree of protection for some licence-handling methods in my ObMimic product. The tools I found all looked rather dated and inappropriate. I did eventually find a tool that seems adequate, in conjunction with an "@Obfuscatable" annotation to mark the methods that I want it to obfuscate, but I can't help feeling there's scope for someone to come up with a more modern solution, or possibly even re-think the whole concept.
