So following feedback regarding Mongrel's configuration I followed Jared Richardson's instructions and setup a Mongrel cluster with Pound. To make things more even I lowered Grails' threadpool to 10 in tomcat and re-ran the tests. I found that Rails' performance degrades, whilst Grails' performance is even better with only 10 threads overall.
