I've never been a big fan of visual GUI designers. As tools, they demo incredibly well. I mean, as many of us have seen the Matisse screencast demo as have seen the "build a blog in five minutes" Rails screencast. But despite all this impressive functionality in terms of thick tooling, I've never found GUI designers to be very useful in Java.
