The lessons I took away from working for an Indy Domain Name Speculator in 2001 not only relate to software engineering but also to ethics. When I worked for this start up I saw everything from the two managers, the CEO and his girlfriend, ducking debtors by not answering phones and written correspondence to out-right lying about business mission, strategies, and etc.

It seemed like at times that the CEO and his girlfriend were too scared to stop habitual lying and training to build a high tech product because it would indicate no real experience or skills. Where is the sense of adventure in refusing to grow in skills and experience?

By actually refusing to gain new skills and experience through training the CEO and his girlfriend have guaranteed that the value of the start-up falls daily as the reputation of the habitual lying spreads. Without skills in developing database driven web applications the 11,000 domain names have a value of exactly less than zero. Hiding from debtors and reality will not change that value.

What is the value in standing still in high technology? It is not like the CEO and his girlfriend cannot change their habitual lying ways and make an effort to beg for training. It is certainly less costly than losing $1,340,000 over ten years. For example, these two people could be taught rails framework web application programming in about 24 months with 12 months going towards re-training them to be truthful and honest and how to follow directions.

Generally, given the past VC offers that have been offered to me a VC will pay for web 2.0 rails framework web application with $15,000 cash upfront and stock options accounting for about $1o million dollars.

If only the CEO and his girlfriend knew of an individual they could beg to train them both in programming and ethical business practices.
