Many people are confused when they see the words Gateway in the mobile environment. The Domain Name Speculator Start-Up in Indy that I worked for in 2001 was certainly confused when trying to bully me into believing that you need to deploy a WAP/SMS gateway to deliver WAP/SMS content.
They did not understand despite claiming to talk to the Nokia CEO that mobile networks like the internet itself are not composed of similar networks but dissimilar networks that have to have an piece of hardware/software to talk to one another. Because companies developing applications are not service providers it is cheaper to partner with a 3rd party that partners with providers to provide this 'gateway' service.
If those providers are not accessible in your area than you partner with a local wireless provider running the WAP/SMS gateway in their data-center and you are choosing the WAP/SMS gateway that can handle multiple wireless standards to connect to everyone. The most famous WAP/SMS gateway was first developed by one of the most famous Linux coders, .
But, even than its not the WAP/SMS gateway that is the most important part as most times your application will have to work with all mobile devices in WAP/SMS. It is the framework that runs on your server allowing the translation between WAP/SMS standards such as WURFL.
Given that now a Mobile company in Indy seems to be making revenue pursuing the WAP/SMS directory idea that was proposed to the Indy Domain Name Speculator Start-Up in 2001 it might be wise for the CEO of the Domain Name Speculator Start-Up to wise up and fix everyt wrong he committed and beg for a 2nd chance.
What is hot right now? Systems Analysis and Automation. No, no, it is an inside joke as what is hot right now is applying systems analysis and automation to specific mobile development problems to increase revenue and decrease development time. Some peers and professionals believe that this 'plumbing' should not go in the IDE but be this big hulking mess of dissimilar systems that the developer uses.
But, just as the internet and mobile networks use gateways to talk to dissimilar systems; the developers IDE should also be a gateway to translate and talk to dissimilar developer frameworks, build systems, and etc and thus decrasing costs to develop applications.
CEOs who are accustomed to copying and pasting as their main developer experience will not understand the simplicity of the above viewpoints as they never have gone through the true developer training and exploration of auto0mating something with computer technology. The most dangerous part to any start-up is a CEO who will not gain experience before mouthing off. It is the number one killer of start-ups in high technology.
In some areas of m mobile technology this set of viewpoints translates to porting intense MIDP games to the CDC area instead of CLDC to deal with he trend of casual gaming on low end phones and intense gaming on CDC enabled smart-phones. On the business side you might see two-tiered business applications with one version for MIDP CLDC and one for CDC from the same basic code base.
