I think the biggest reason why I like Debian GNU/Linux as a Development Platform is the handling of certain issues. For example, Debian does not muck up /usr/local and thus you are able to store programs there that do not come with the distributions and have it messed up. That may also explain why there are so many LiveCD distros based on a Debian core for new uses.
