ESR has made some comments about having non-free binary drivers within Linux to speed Desktop adoption via this Register article. In this case his somewhat incocrect.

1. Mobile Device shiments outnumber 3 to 1 compared ot desktop systems.
2. Linux Mobile OS shipments will soon surpass SymbianOS/
3. The beneifts of the Linux Mobile OS movement to desktop systems is software drivers that are free and work with the commerical formats such as ipod and etc.
4. The largest countries in population size have a very good incentive to choose Linux Mobile OS over other solutions to meet their ecomomic goals.

It is not to say that everyone should not be concerned however there is no need to give up our freedoms to get desktop users to linux as the Linux Mobile OS movement will supply that indirect benefit. ESR, wake up to Linux Mobile OS potential benefits for Desktop Linux!
