It seems that Indiana has embarked on a program of deploying Linux desktops in classrooms to save money according to this article. Not just windows computers with Linux added but bare computers with only Linux added and no MS Windows.

The reason it is sucessfull is that while the hardware costs $250 to build(probably netboot machines attached to a server) that is harware that lasts 10 years as oppposed to udpating MS Windows every 3 years which would mean $300 per pupil as opposed to $250 per pupil. $50 times 1 million kids is alot of money Indiana does not have at this moment beyond the initial outlay of $250 times 1 million kids.
