You know what the Indianapolis DomainName SPecualtor that I unknowingly worked for at one point reminds me of? The Divine InterVentures re-org strategy when the company is not producing anything of value. For those that do not remember Divine InterVentures think IdeaLab except not Paul Allen and located in Chicago.

The strategies seem similar because in both they try to attempt too much with the resources they have rather than face reality and trim down the plan and feature list and do one successfull launch of a product at a time. In the DivineInterVentures case it was acquiring way too many companies and should have concentrated on one at a time. In other words the same strategy that originally made the Novell owner family money at a time when VCs would not travel to Utah.

In the Domain Name Specualtor example, spending too much on acquriing and keeping 11,000 domain names rather than keep 10 and do one successfull launch of one web application/service at a time. And to be quite frank at developing one web application/service at a time with only 10 domain names you have the resources to train the parts of working management that is not skilled in high tech. Attempting 11,000 with the same reources and you do not have time to do the training and get managment pointing in the right direction.

And it would not suprise me that the Domain Name Speculator Start-Up in Indianapolis over 8 years spent $1 Million in wasting money on this strategy fo destrcution by not managing resources.

It is frustrating not only because I use to be a trainer and instructor and because it is not the unique idea that becomes the captial that VCs are attracted to fund but the unique implementation build by a developer that VCs look for to buidl acompany around. And usually that take sone unique gifted develoepr and working management that is willing to be trained in high tech to do some of the heavy lifting during development.
