In working for start-ups and completing projects for start-ups you really see stuff that makes you want to scream. So wha tis the worst sign of start-up incompetence that I have seen?

The worst exampel comes from a start-up in Indianapolis. The person who adminsiters the servers thinks that the weekly backup by the hosting company also backs up databases. He in fact has run with this assumption for 8 years and hence no database driven web application operated by this start-up ever stays up for very long in working order.

While it is true that you can automate the backing up of databases through the administering tools of your database server; it is a separate operation by the adminstrator of the db server not the hosting company. Can we say DOH!

I do not know which is worse; relying on that wrong assumption or maintaining that wrong assumption for 8 years and maintaining that one is experienced and skilled.
