I think I am close to getting my Foss site design close to what I want in my site.

ShareMe Foss site

For a biggger view, view this file. The top and bottom right menus change the highlight to denote your location within the site. I alos changed the highlighting of hypertext links in the main content to match the site design rather than just an underline.
