I've just discovered xml11. It's an amazing toolkit that translates AWT Java application to AJAX in the browser. These guys have got a lot of stuff up their sleeves and it's GPL and readily available for download from sourceforge. If you're interested in Google Web Toolkit but think it doesn't really cut it for you, take 25 minutes of your time and watch the first third of this video, it's will be worth your while.
