Here is my Friday Why is blog

Why is Ruby on Rails called Ruby

I often find it quite tricky to get to the information about naming, it's hard to know what to type in but in this case RoR had a very good website and I would recommend you head on over that way to see what the fuss about Ruby on Rails is all about.

The money quote

Ruby on Rails is gets its name because it's programmed in the language Ruby and has an MVC web framework called Rails which is written in Ruby.

If you want the more detailed description of this the I recommend you check out
http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/rails/pages/StartAtTheBeginning

which is a very good article to start off with in Ruby, well I found it useful and I didn't know about Ruby until I did this blog.

There is a second why here really. Why is the Framework called Rails well according to the RoR FAQ http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/rails/pages/FAQ

"R for Ruby, a play on Struts, and I liked the sound of it ;)."

The last question I suppose is how long has it been going for, well according to the FAQ it had been used before but wasn't released until 24th of July 2004. Which is quite surprising at how popular it has become in such a short space of time.

Finally who should we thank for Ruby on Rails, direct your clapping over to

David Heinemeier Hansson

a bit of a link to him here http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/rails/pages/DavidHeinemeierHansson

or you can read his blog http://www.loudthinking.com/

I read the last few entries of his blog and it is quite interesting and not solely concerned with technical items.

So there you go, I hope you learnt something trivial and see you back here next Friday for another Why is
