When most people view the move of Derby from closed source to an Apache project, they snicker at speed issues and memory issues. But, they snickered at JIT when it first came out as well with the almost the same performance issues.

What is suprising is the simplicity of the approach in Derby's JIT implementation. For those who are un-aware Derby is a java based database that supports its java object serilization of SQL statements of generating bytecode just in time similar to the JVM JIT approaches.

Part of the apporach is artifical in that it requires java developers to use prepared statements. However, with packages such as
