MC4J is not a bad JMX console but sometiems the directiosn are completely incorrect. For example, the MCC4J Tomcat directions are in fact incorrect for using the JDK 1.5 JMX integration and will give you a JVM exit with error 1067.

If you want authentication than you will have two more lines according to ASF directions at this page. Yes, the MC4J page for monitoring JDK 5 is also incorrect with the same mistake as you should have at least 4 lines to get JMX monitoring in JDK 5 running without a JVM error and exit.
