There is aninteresting trend emphasized in this article at BusinessReviewOnline. Towards the bottom of the article it finally lists the full line of SmartPhones coming from Motorola. We have A920 powered by Symbian with J2ME, we have A700 powered by MS SmartPhoneOS with J2ME, and we have Linux based A760 with J2ME.

I tend to believe that ever major non leading handset vendor may adopt this approach to see what OS platform fits than narrow their offerings on the OS platforms that do not generate sales. Thus, you may continue to see vendors drop from the ownership of Symbian but still retain licensee rights to continue to support their Symbian powered handsets. The Asian group of handset manufacutres is already moving towards this mode of operation of putting out multiple handset variations based on OS platform to see what sinks and what swims.
