I am sure many of you cannot use Goolge's Desktop search for a various reasons. A little known project Regain uses the Lucene Search engine technology from the ASF project Jakarta to power your desktop search requirements.

It runs both on windows and linux and also has server part as well for your server requirements. On a low end or midrange workstation it takes 3 hours to index your large hard drive runing in background and regain is not a memory or process hog.
