I read an article yesterday that said work will soon stop providing you with a computer. It'll just be expected that you already have your own machine to bring and use.

Indeed, I use my own laptop at work: by choice, I could get work to get me a fancy Dell laptop if I wanted. But, as an Apple-Fan-Boy-Nut-Job, I much prefer working my own PowerBook. (Luckily, the project I work on isn't tied to an OS).

This has gotten me to think that next time I get involved in setting up a software company, I'd suggest we don't even offer to spend money of the programmer's computers. It seems to me that the people you'd want (Rock-Star-Coders) would either (1.) already have their own suped up computer, or, (2.) prefer to pick and buy which one they'd use.

Of course, I'd always prefer to get shit for free (have the company give me money to go buy my own PowerBook)...but I feel like there's a psychological benefit to having your own machine, and it certainly is a "make sure everyone is an investor"/"put your money where your mouth is" feel to it, i.e., the money you spend on buying your own machine is an investment in the company.

(Of course, the company would still buy servers, printers, phones [maybe not], and all that shit.)
