Alright, I just called J2ME games in mobile phones "stupid games on small screens" in my last entry - but please attribute that to my bias towards using J2ME for enterprise work.
But even I have to admit the potential for multi-player gaming using downloaded J2ME apps. In fact, I just stumbled upon this PR blurb in PokerMag.com where a company called Developnet announced that people can try out a demo of their multi-player gaming framework running on a test J2EE server.
Perhaps there will come a day when zombies playing blackjack in smoky Atlantic City casinos will be replaced by zombies playing blackjack all night in their pajamas - that's progress for you!
For demonstration purposes, an early prototype of Developnet's kGame product has been deployed to a J2EE test server that is publicly accessible via the Internet. To demonstrate the multi-player facilities provided by kGame, Developnet have developed a simple two player head-to-head version of the classic Connect 4 game in J2ME. The Connect 4 game can be executed within a colour J2ME emulator or directly on a colour J2ME-enabled mobile device, such as the Nokia 7650.
