Feed Description: J2ME, emergent software and other tiny things.
Nokia believes it can grow the market for cellphones from the current 1.2 billion to 2 billion users by aggressively marketing mobiles to such emerging markets as India, Russia, and Latin America.
What does this mean for J2ME developers?
Well, at first glance, J2ME advocates might start celebrating because of the belief that here is a new market for Java apps, but the celebration would be short-lived. Nokia apparently plans on concentrating on voice services at first and selling very basic phones. This however, does not preclude that Nokia might try to grow ARPU (Average Revenue per user) later by adding phones that can download ringtones, mobile games and apps. In fact, given that most people are pretty much the same everywhere, the success of beyond-voice services elsewhere in the globe should give a hint to Nokia that maybe people in Russia, India, and Latin America are just as susceptible to playing stupid games on small screens.
