Financial Times has a very in depth market analysis of how SmartPhones are replacing PDAs within the Mobile Device Market. From the programming standpoint coding J2ME for SmartPhones is the same for PDAs in that one is accepting input by stylus for user input and etc; thus no change in the development process.

Reasons for fast uptake amoung consumers are related to price and functionability. One, SmartPhones are always sold at a discount amoung Mobile Network Operators as compared to PDAs. Two, an increasing amount of SamrtPhones come with voice activated dialing thus offering more enhanced functionality with handsets functions without sacrificing the PDA functions.
