The Register is running the following story this morning.
Borland open sources JBuilder Borland Software is releasing code from its core JBuilder integrated development environment (IDE) into the Eclipse open source community after a surprise drop in first-quarter sales.
The company hopes to offset JBuilder's R&D expenses by putting the suite into Eclipse, where the open source community would - theoretically - drive API and feature improvements.
From a pure business standpoint I'm not surprised. As a guy interested in desktop Java I'm very curious. JBuilder and Eclipse seem like an odd fit. Last check I had JBuilder was written in Swing. I'm sure there is a huge portion of code that is view independent which can be leveraged by the Eclipse community. However, what to do with the Swing code? Are they going to use the AWT_SWT bridge and slap plugins into Eclipse? Are they going to convert things to SWT? Are you going to see two IDE's that leverage common code? Many questions whose answers only time will tell. Regardless, access to the JBuilder souce will give desktop developers access to see how another large scale desktop Java application has been designed.
