You never get the impression of the complexity of the J2ME platform until you try to explain to someone how to determine which ooptional APIs are accessible on what device series and on what MobileOS version. For example, how many J2ME developers know that SymbianOS has in its past used 3 Java platforms counting J2ME(Embedded Java and Personal Java before its profile inclusion in J2ME platform).
Than thrown into that mix is optional J2ME apis for the DeviceSeries platforms such as Series60 and Nokia Series40. Than you have a few Symbian devices that as an OS option can run the CDC J2ME Platform featues such as the PersonalJava profile.
I should have a rough draft of this tonight included in the wikibook I started a few days ago.
