I understand that one of the main selling points of Java in Japan in the early days was the ability to write identifiers in natively spelled Japanese. Using romanization was possible with earlier programming languages, but it's awkward.
The early programming language Focal had a set of binary patches that you could load in to localize everything, including the keywords of the language (SET, TYPE, DO, GOTO, etc.) into Spanish.
