In my faculty they are talking about java is going to be history, and the future is for vb.net and for C#.
Well my friends to think so?
Please help me to prove this claim is false by sending me your objective opinions?.

Yes, and COBAL is history. As we learned with all the year 2000 frenzy, right? ... er, right?

Claing that most any language, especially Java, is history is idiotic. Usually people who make such claims are not being objective, but trying to push their own agenda (and maybe getting some sort of a kickback from Microsoft?) Java is far from history. VB.net is not a realistic language for real development projects. It is okay for small tinkering, but embarking on major development projects with it is foolhardy (maybe not as bad as VB proper was, but still not as good as the alternatives). C# is a lot nicer, but it is still very much in its infancy, as is the whole .net platform.

Well my friend Matt Gerrans can you predicate what programming language will prevail for the coming few years. Tow years ago I rushed to java and gave it great importance as it is a language for at least 5 or 6 years, was I on the right way? Or do you think it is not a good practice to depend on one language?
Thank you

I think it is a very bad practice to depend on one language. A programmer who knows one language is like a chef who can cook one dish. Or a painter who can paint one thing (Jackson Pollock comes to mind :-).

By learning many languages, you get more then the knowledge of each language. You get the Gestalt effect: knowing many languages helps you work more effectively in any one of them.

There is absolutely no good reason to limit yourself to one programming language. You don't lose anything by learning more. I never understand when people post questions about whether they should "switch" to another language, as if you only have room in your brain for one programming language and must remove the old one before installing the new one.

I think one other language you would like to have a look at is Ruby.
