Actually the reason isn't so they burn or save screens, I do believe that the reason is so that the display doesn't get etched, meaning that if you are to display a image on the screen for a amount of time that when the monitor was off you could actually see a shadow of this image, I have seen this in the past but that was in the days of punch cards waiting for a spot on the mainframe to compile your code!
